February 24 – March 2, 2013

Every year the National Eating Disorders Association hosts NEDAwareness Week  to increase outreach and understanding of eating disorders and body image issues.  The theme this year is Everybody Knows Somebody because as awareness of eating disorders has increased, so too has the understanding that these disorders don’t discriminate – ANYONE can be affected.

Last year hundreds of people saw our documentary Someday Melissa, the story of an eating disorder, loss and hope at screenings across the country.   While making the film, I could only dream that by telling Melissa’s story it might make a difference in the fight against eating disorders.  That dream is coming true as the film has become a powerful tool for raising awareness of eating disorders and enabling a dialog. It provides a platform to discuss education, treatment and prevention of eating disorders.  It has helped strip away some of the shame and secrecy surrounding eating disorders.

While we work year round at Someday Melissa to bring attention to eating disorders and body image issues, we wanted to do something special for NEDAwareness Week.

All screenings booked for NEDAwareness Week will receive a 25% discount.

This year for NEDAwareness Week, we are offering a discount on all screenings that take place from February 24 through March 2, 2013.  Screenings are already booked across the United States and in Canada with many more that are still being finalized.  My dream for NEDAwareness Week this year is A Screening in Every State and we are well on our way to accomplishing this – with YOUR help!  Check our map to see if there is one scheduled in your state.

A Screening Toolkit to aid in planning your event is provided for all screenings. The information in the toolkit includes strategies, tips and time lines for a successful screening, including finding a location, creating a program and marketing your event as well as tips for minimizing eating disorder triggers.

I hope Melissa’s story will encourage, motivate and provide promise to those suffering, or to anyone whose life has been impacted by this disease.  Last year I wrote in our blog about NEDAwareness Week 2012 screenings and discussions that took place in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma and Virginia.  It was thrilling that NEDA’s keynote event that week was a New York screening. I’m excited to see what this year brings.

Help us meet our goal to have a Screening of Someday Melissa in Every State!
